AT least 17 people were killed in two separate accidents involving commuter omnibuses that occurred in Lower Gweru and Marondera within 24hours.

BY OWN CORRESPONDENTS Twelve people died on the spot and one person was seriously injured when a kombi they were travelling in veered off the road and rolled several times along the Gweru-Maboleni Road on Tuesday evening.

The only survivor in the accident is admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital, where his condition was said to be stable.

National police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed both accidents and appealed to public vehicle drivers to stick to road regulations.

The Marondera accident claimed five lives and left several others injured when their commuter omnibus collided with an Isuzu truck and a haulage truck on the 66km peg at the Police Projects Farm along the Harare-Mutare Highway.

The haulage truck driver, Virimayi Masocha, who escaped unhurt, said the kombi driver, rammed into the back of an Isuzu truck that had slowed down at a cattle-crossing point and later collided with his lorry.

All the injured were rushed to Marondera Hospital, while bodies of the deceased have also been taken to the hospital’s mortuary
