THE local organising committee of the 13th edition of the National Youth Games that ended in Mutare last week are yet to get their allowances from the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) NewsDay Sport can reveal.

The curtain to the games came down in the eastern border city on August, with Manicaland clinching the overall first prize for the first time in the history of the games.
General manager of the local organising committee, Zakaria Chikwangwani confirmed the matter to NewsDay yesterday before adding that they were working flat out to pay the allowances.
“Yes the local organising committee is yet to be paid their allowances but we are working flat-out to makesure they are paid. It is still work in progress,” he said.
“We will try and make sure that we also pay all those who volunteered during the games. I am not at liberty to share the amounts as of now.
We had just over 300 volunteers and some executive members in the committte.”

A disgruntled member in the LOC, who refused to be named for fear of victimisation, said they were now worried at the delay in receiving their money.
“We are worried with the delay; they just said they are processing our cash. I hope we are going to be paid in-time. We are supposed to be paid by the Sports and Recreation Commission,” he said.
The games were marred by a low turnout after most provinces failed to send participants for various categories.
Harare province hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons after their football teams were disqualified from the games for failing to pay the required affiliation fees.
The women’s and men’s teams were disowned in Mutare by their own management. Harare, who were the defending champions, eventually came second on the medals table.
