Organising secretary, Major Fabian Chitungo yesterday said they were expecting to raise money from participants as well as from a dinner to be held on Friday before the golfers tee-off on Saturday morning.

“We are not looking at less than 100 golfers on Saturday. We are expecting at least 20 teams, which will pay a registration fee of $140 each. However, we have other fundraising activities which include an auction and then we have a dinner on Friday night for the golfers before the competition on Saturday,” Major Chitungo said.

Harry Allen Golf Club vice-captain, Jebus Karuru confirmed the event, before adding that they were expecting a huge turnout.

“We would have loved to see golfers from outside as we have also invited golfers from Hwange, Gweru and Masvingo. We are not expecting less than 100 golfers,” Karuru said.

The competition will be played in a four-ball-better-ball format, with each team having four players. Bakers Inn sales and marketing manager Paul Chimboya said a number of companies were coming through to register.

“We have got a number of companies that are coming through. We are partnering the army and all proceeds are going to army charities,” Chimboya said.

Some of Bulawayo’s golfers expected for the Saturday event include Mufaro Chivonivoni, Moses Mlalazi, former football great, Ebson “Sugar” Muguyo, Wilfred Chinembiri, Shepherd Huni and Lorraine Huwa among others.

The beneficiaries of the army charities include Tsanga Lodge Convalescent Centre, Army Widows and Orphans Benevolent Fund, ZNA Benevolent Fund, ZNA Schools Welfare Trust Fund and ZNA Patients Welfare.

Among other fundraising activities, the army is also involved in football and horse racing.
