YOUNG, emerging and established local designers are set to showcase their unique talents and knowledge of local tribal traits when they converge at this year’s Zimbabwe Fashion Week (ZFW) slated for Thursday to Sunday at Palm Estate, Hellensvale.

Running under the theme Fashion Redefined, this year’s glamorous show will have specified designs focusing on the country’s seven different tribes (Shona, Ndebele, Nambya, Ndau, Tonga, Kalanga and Chewa), as they aim to reincarnate the hot debate if the nation has symbolical attire.
ZWF executive director Priscilla Chigariro said they were expecting a huge audience this year, as they had lowered the entrance fees by 25% to accommodate more fashion enthusiasts and promote showcasing designers.
“We’re trying to make it more accessible to people because this is a marketing platform for the designers (and) there is no point having a really expensive function which no one can come and see,” she said.
“We have trained almost 60 designers since the beginning of Zimbabwe Fashion Week, which is something that is quite notable because it is very expensive to get fashion education.
Fashion occupies an integral part of a nation and Zimbabweans have for long been caught in between Western fashion trends and those adopted from South Africa and Nigeria.
