It’s not easy to silence Luke Masomere, but Highlanders might have done just that when they crushed How Mine in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.

Masomere had accused match officials of aiding Highlanders each time his team faced the Bulawayo giants, but the referees had nothing to do with the five goals his team conceded.

Obediah Tarumbwa bagged a brace in the 10th and 60th minutes with Knox Mutizwa also getting two in the 64th and 88th minutes while the fifth came from Simon Munawa in the 33rd minute.

How Mine’s Menard Mupera scored the consolation goal in the 13th minute.

How Mine coach Luke Masomere said his side did not play as a unit and were not involved in the match physically due to injuries that have dogged the team.

“Highlanders were very lucky, but they scored very good goals and they played as a unit and we did not play as a unit we got punished all the time,” he said.

“With a little bit of accuracy they could have scored more goals. How Mine didn’t play well but it is not the end of the world.
They scored five but what matters the most is that they got the three points. We were very disjointed and most of my players were not involved physically because of injuries. But we give credit to Highlanders. Today they played their game because the referees were fair.Today we lost to a better team.”

Highlanders coach Bongani Mafu was naturally elated.

“I told them to go out and enjoy. I think we worry too much. That freedom of expression showed. We had good moves and good goals,” he said. “We are still in the relegation quagmire. We are still in hell we need to collect more points and get out of there. We need to look at ourselves and say we are not where we want to be. I am happy for the players.”

Highlanders were first on the ball from the first half of the match with their earliest effort coming in the fifth minute but Godfrey Makaruse who could have easily scored shot wide.

In the 10th minute following a failed offside trap and a quick counter attack from Highlanders Tarumbwa received the ball from the midfield, beat his markers before he lobbed the ball over a drawn Donovan Bernard.

Three minutes later Mupera cancelled the Highlanders lead after he took advantage of a Highlanders clearance that landed in his path and released a 40-metre drive that caught Bosso keeper Njabulo Nyoni off guard.

Bosso restored their advantage in the 33rd minute when Munawa obliged with a goal from Makaruse’s cross inside the box.

After the breather Highlanders continued to pile on the pressure and at the stroke of the hour Tarumbwa increased his team’s tally.

Munawa won the ball in the midfield and sent it to Mutizwa who managed to draw out Bernard who had again been let down by his defenders and chipped it over him with Tarumbwa aiding it in.

Four minutes later Mutizwa got the fourth after a long ball from the midfield was punched back into play by Bernard but only as far as Munawa who laid it through for Mutizwa to score.

Mutizwa made it a brace in the 88th minute when substitute Gabriel Nyoni spotted him on the near side unmarked and poor defending from How Mine again let them down.

  3. If Bosso had won by a 1 goal margin or the match ending in a draw, Luke Masomere could have been complaining.
