With the win, however, Dongo Sawmill remained stuck at the foot of the league log as they battle for survival. Elliot Mungiri gave the hosts the lead in the 29th minute, pouncing on a mistake by Tsholotsho defenders before Evans Chikwaikwai sealed the win with a long range effort on 50th minute.

Second half substitute Sizabantu Khoza missed from a penalty spot in injury time for the away side, an effort that probably summed how poor show by the Lizwe Sweswe coached side was.

With the win, Dongo now have 16 points, two behind 13-placed Tsholotsho who could have moved out of the relegation zone with a win here.

Dongo coach Shadreck Mugurasave said this victory could be what they needed to kick start their fight against relegation.

“We have showed today that if we can play as a unit, we can win matches and survive relegation. Our performance today gives me so much hope that we will not go down. This is our second win at home this season and if we can work extra hard, there is no way we are going to be relegated. We should have scored four or five goals but we missed good chances and hopefully that will not work against us at the end of the season.”

Sweswe was obviously disappointed to lose a match that could have seen his side move to 12th position.

“I’m very disappointed to lose against a team that is also fighting relegation. These are kind of matches that we should not lose.”

Tsholotsho came into the match buoyed by their last week draw against Dynamos, but were terribly slow to get going yesterday and had not been of the brilliance of their goalie Nickel Marichi, they could have been down by two goals in the first quarter of the hour.

However, their luck soon ran out just before the hour mark when Chikwaikwai’s trademark long throw into the box was not properly dealt with and Mungiri pounced to slot home.

The home side continued to create the better chances and looked the mostly likely to score the next goal.

Just five minutes of the second had lapsed and the scoreboard was ticking again when Chikwaikwai found himself unmarked just outside the box and released a shot that gave Marichi no chance.

Tsholotsho had a perfect opportunity to reduce the deficit on 90th minute when match day referee Brighton Chimene pointed to the spot after Kudzanai Mangondo had handled inside the box.

Khoza stepped up but dragged his shot wide off target.
