The ZCTU had last Saturday organised similar demonstrations in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Gweru, but they were quashed by police at the last minute.

In a letter dated August 9 2015, a senior police officer from Chinhoyi identified as Chief Superintendent S G Ndou said: “This office doesn’t have any objections, you can go ahead as scheduled.”

ZCTU Mashonaland West provincial co-ordinator Wellington Chiparamakura said they were happy as a region to have been given the green light to demonstrate against the job losses which have affected about 20 000 employees since the Supreme Court made its landmark ruling last month.

“We are happy and I think the ball is in our court to mobilise as many workers as possible to make the day a success,” Chiparamakura said.

“The court ruling gives employers the option to terminate workers’ contracts after simply giving three months’ notice.” The government is currently working towards amending the Labour Act in a bid to stop the job losses.
