The Ant-man was screened at the weekend at Eastgate cinema — marking the film as the last entry to Phase 2 of the Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and 12th in the series of its super hero films.

The premise remains similar to previous super hero films, where the titular character is given a second chance to do good by becoming a super hero. In this case the supper hero was donning a suit with the power to shrink the wearer to ant size.

The movie starts by giving the history of the suit and conflicted past of Scott Lang the Ant-man and protagonist — played by actor Paul Rudd — before going into the main storyline.

It then goes into the tone of film, science fiction action shrouded in light-hearted comedy delivered exceptionally well by Michael Pena who plays Luis, Lang’s closest friend and supporting character. The action in the movie offers stunning fight sequences through visual effects, especially on the fight between the Ant-man and the main antagonist, Yellow Jacket, played by actor Corey Stoll.

The visual effects in the movie give particular detail during scenes where the super hero shrinks and in 3D that allows the audience to experience his world at a microscopic level.

Often, however, the dialogue of the supporting characters and drama aspects seem to limit the film’s lead from many interactions as he has fewer dialogue lines than supporting characters.

At times, the movie seems to especially depend heavily on the creator of the Ant-man suit, Hank Pym, played by the veteran Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas, which further limits Rudd’s character from fully developing.

The film offers Rudd a different foray into film as he is known for playing comic roles — which makes it hard to develop the proper emotional depth between his characters. The Ant-man has good visual effects and humour. It opts to focus more on the emotional conflict between the supporting characters Hope Pym — played by actress Evangeline Lily — and her father Hank Pym.

The Ant-man is yet another generic super hero story of a man given a second chance to redeem himself by saving the day with the best part being the fight between the Ant-man and Yellow Jacket.

The international critic rating website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 79% fresh rating.
