The inaugural awards ceremony has been slated for August 22 in the United States.

ZYAA vice-president Emmanuel Makoni said they realised that the Zimbabwe Achievers’ Annual Awards held in the United Kingdom needed to be adopted in the United States.

“We felt there was need for us in North America to play our role in awarding and encouraging young Zimbabwean entrepreneurs,” he said.

He said Zimbabwe had vast talent scattered across the globe that needed to be recognised and honoured.

“We had two months open for public nominations and so far we have a panel of experts in various fields based in the US going through this year’s 118 nominees,” he told NewsDay.

Makoni said there would be four nominees for each of the 17 categories which include media, music, business and inventions.

“Our focus is mainly on developing our country’s youths. We will also host a youth entrepreneurship conference a day before the awards ceremony to accommodate upcoming entrepreneurs interested in growth,” Makoni said.

He said winners would be awarded with trophies adding that they were expecting a number of influential Zimbabweans including radio and television personality Zororo Makamba, to grace the event. Makoni said the awards would motivate youths to work hard and the one-day conference before the ceremony was driven by the desire to educate the next generation of entrepreneurs.
