Tangisai Hwema (36), of House No 997 St Mary’s, is accused of assaulting Arnold Ngarakana (37) with clenched fists, leaving him with a cut on his lower lip.

He pleaded guilty to the charges, attributing the act to ancestral spirits. In his warned-and-cautioned statement, Hwema said at the time that he committed the crime, he was possessed by ancestral spirits.

Circumstances are that on July 26 at around 10:00hrs, the complainant was on duty at the charge office and Hwema, who had been arrested for malicious damage to property on RRB2485955, was brought to the police station.

Ngarakana ordered Hwema to supply him with his particulars at the same time removing some of his property for detention, but the latter refused.

Hwema is alleged to have tried to run away, but was apprehended. He then turned violent and headbutted Ngarakana once on the face. He is said to have assaulted Ngarakana with clenched fists twice on his face and he sustained injuries. Ngarakana managed to handcuff Hwema with the help of other officers.

Magistrate Jessie Kufa remanded the accused to August 7.

Innocent Tizirai prosecuted.
