Thirteen candidates had applied to contest the primary elections, but the provincial electtions directorate disqualified two of them for failing to meet the required criteria.

Educationist-cum-politician Cleopas Kundiona, businessman Lucas Chimoka and apostolic sect leader Lawrence Katsiru were the leading contenders in the race to represent Zanu PF in the September 19 by-elections.

Other candidates include Jerry Gotora, former mayor Ralph Chimanikire, war veteran Douglas Chitekuteku, Nelson Watyoka, Harold Gamu, Michael Matenga, and war veteran Patrick Makombe.

The two disqualified candidates are businessman Ashok Gulab and Tamuka Magwenzi.

Zanu PF Mashonaland East provincial chairperson Joel Biggie Matiza yesterday said all was in place for today’s primaries.

“We are expecting a peaceful election.

“The party members are going to choose their representative who will also win come September. We are retaining the seat at all costs because it belongs to Zanu PF,” said Matiza.

Meanwhile,Katsiru and University of Zimbabwe Department of Political Studies dean Charity Manyeruke made it into the provincial executive.

Katsiru was elected secretary for administration (main wing) while Manyeruke is the new secretary for administration for the Women’s League.

Other party members who landed posts include war veteran and Zanu PF Mutoko East legislator Ricky Mawere who took over as secretary of lands, Bernard Makokove (deputy chairperson, main wing) while Tendai Mangwiro was appointed secretary for security.
