Suspended town clerk seeks audience with mayor

HARARE mayor Bernard Manyenyeni yesterday said suspended town clerk Tendai Mahachi’s lawyers had written to Town House seeking a meeting to resolve their impasse and chart the way forward.

Manyenyeni confirmed receipt of the letter saying the meeting was likely to be held next week, but insisted that Mahachi would remain on leave until council has completed its investigations.

“They wrote a letter and they are saying let us sit and discuss on the contract. He remains on leave and we are negotiating on how we can reach an agreement,” Manyenyeni said.

Mahachi was suspended by Manyenyeni early this month to expedite investigations into how he administered council business and issues to do with his succession plan.

Sources at Town House said: “The Mahachi issue is a done deal. He is going.”

Mahachi’s contract ends in December. NewsDay established that Thembinkosi Magwaliba was one of the lawyers representing Mahachi in the matter. Magwaliba was, however, not immediately available for comment.
