The 82-year-old speed devil last featured at the popular local racing event at the same stage last year as he brought his Rail Car and tore the local drag race quarter mile records to shreds topping some mind blowing speeds to set the track record.

On that unforgettable race day Murray romping home in just 10,20 seconds, the first time that any car had breached the 10 seconds region in the history of the event.

This time around Murray will be competing in this event in a purpose-built class championship winning, methanol powered, Chevy Chevair V8.

Dragpro-Sables club official Suzan Zevgolis confirmed Murray’s participation at the weekend’s drag racing meet.

“The Third round of the Telecel 2015 Drag Racing Series will be held this Sunday and not even the coldest weather will keep racing drag racing fans and competitors from this high octane event.

Adding to the usual spectacle, South African Drag Racing hero, Reg Murray, will be competing in this event in his purpose-built class championship winning, methanol powered, Chevy Chevair V8,” she said “Reg has regularly won the South African championships and has set class records with this vehicle. He hopes to come out on top in Zimbabwe again, following up on his two previous successes in 2013 and 2014. He may, however, have to work a lot harder this time to clinch the crown as Zimbabwean competitors have not been sleeping during his absence,” she added.

The cash prize on offer from Turbo Solutions Africa for the first motorcycle to break 9.5 seconds and motor car to break 10.5 seconds in the 2015 Drag Racing Series has remained unclaimed so far this year, but at the rate competing vehicles are improving, this prize may well be claimed on Sunday.

Alan Cacace in his monster V8 AC Cobra, who managed a best time of 11.09 seconds at the last event held in May, is closest to breaking into what many consider to be the ultimate achievement for a road-legal car – the 10 second club.

Less than half a second behind, Terry Allberry, Mano Zevgolis and Kevin Almark will all be trying to close the gap on Alan.

On the bikes, Drag Racing popular figures Les Carlson and Phil Archenoul will be battling it out with Tiffany Fisher working hard to close the gap on them. Racing starts at 11.45 am and the crowd favorite Elimination Event will take place at 4.00 pm.

Sunday the 26th of July looks set to once again offer a fantastic day of motorsport action for all.
