The Mbende group walked away $4 000 richer for their efforts after claiming the top prize in the competition, which is in its 52nd year running. Chinyakare dance group came second and got $3 000 for their efforts while Mashonaland West’s Budiriro danced away with $2 000.

The competition, which is sponsored by Delta through its Chibuku brand, is organised by the Zimbabwe Traditional Dance Association in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe.

Makarekare faced stiff competition from nine other provincial winners namely Ezimnyama (Bulawayo), Jahunda Community Arts (Matabeleland South), Umkhankaso Womajaha (Matabeleland North), Gango of Masvingo Teacher’s College, Dhumatasangana (Manicaland) Wundigule Zambian Nyao (Midlands) Chinyakare Chinyakare (Mashonaland Central), Budiriro (Mash West) and Shingayi dance group from Harare.

Displaying well-coordinated rhythmic dances against a pulsating beat, the Goromonzi-based outfit was the 5000-strong crowd’s favourite.
