“From what has been happening in the past three days since this coaching clinic started, I can say it has been an eye opener for most of the local coaches,” Chalemetsa said.

He added; “The clinic was open to everyone and the majority of the people taking part in this are from schools and some local clubs such as ZRP Raiders and Fairbridge who have representatives. This is a good thing as it helps improve the quality of volleyball.

“I think the coaching clinic had a lot to offer. Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) coaches’ committee chairman Vulindlela Moyo facilitated the event and he has been leading us. Moyo is also a holder of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Level 3 coaching certificate.”

The initiative targeted schools and club coaches to empower them with proper volleyball coaching skills. Some of the topics covered under the course included the history and development of volleyball, basic volleyball techniques, warm-up and cooling, stretching and flexibility, role of sport science and first aid in sport, training session plan, team composition and techniques.

At least 40 coaches took part in the workshop and they are expected to receive certificates after successfully completing the course. The participants also had practice sessions to demonstrate what they had learnt.

Meanwhile, ZVA is looking forward to great improvements on local volleyball as they have shortlisted four candidates to represent the country at the African Volleyball Confederation (Cavb) election that will be held in Algeria in December. ZVA secretary-general Ringisai Mapondera confirmed.

“There is going to be a congress at the Cavb congress in December in Algeria where there will be an election for several positions. For Zimbabwe, we have four candidates for different categories,” Mapondera said.

Fredrick Ndlovu will be in the running for the presidential post while Kenneth Kondo will be contesting the commissioner’s post. Mxolisi Ndlovu will run for the marketing committee post with Mapondera competing for the legal commission position. Mapondera said if Zimbabwe representatives make it into the committee it will be a great advantage.

“We will benefit because we will directly be involved with what will be happening up there. Having such positions gives us direction as Zimbabwe Volleyball,” he said.
