Manicaland came sixth with only eight medals (five gold, one silver and two bronze) in last year’s games that were hosted by the winners Harare, but they are determined to win this time.

Manicaland team general manager Zachariah Chikwangwari yesterday said their preparations were on course and they were ready to host the games.

“We are holding meetings and we will definitely host the games. As the hosting province, we expect to do our best. Naturally, you don’t go into a competition to lose. We are ready and we will do our best, not only in hosting, but in the games,” Chikwangwari said.

The National Youth Games end just a week before Team Zimbabwe leaves for the Africa Games to be held in Congo-Brazzaville from September 2 to 19.

Manicaland hosted the third edition of the annual games in 2005.

Organisers have said $850 000 is needed for the games, a brainchild of the Sports and Recreation Commission. They started in Bulawayo in 2003.

Bulawayo won the games in 2013 when they hosted them for the second time and surrendered the title to Harare last year.

Harare won the competition with 40 medals (17 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze) when they were hosts.

Masvingo were second last year with 16 gold, seven silver and 12 bronze with a total of 35 medals, while Bulawayo were third with 31 medals (nine gold, 13 silver and nine bronze).
