Zimbabwe will battle with Kenya and Zambia for the Gilberson & Page Trophy honours from August 3 to 6 while the Amateur Stroke Play championships are pencilled for August 7 to 9.

A biennial competition, the Gilberson & Page was won by Kenya who were also the hosts the last time out and the East Africans are bringing a very strong team in a bid to retain the title.

Both Kenya and Zambia are expected in the country on Sunday.

Zimbabwe Ladies’ Golf Union publicity officer Evelyn Maisvoreva yesterday announced the eight-member team that will represent Zimbabwe.

Twelve-year-old sensation Danielle Bekker retained her place in the Zimbabwe team, with Yolanda Mubaiwa making a return and newcomers Sarah Blythe-Wood, Emily Jones, Natasha Zelow as well as Brenda Leipi making the squad.

Top golfers Aulia Alfazema and Batsirai Tilowakuti complete the team that is managed by Rhoda Muridzo.

“I think our team is quite strong. Most of the players have played a lot of regional tournaments but this tournament is not about individuals and team work will be crucial. I am sure they will do us proud,” Maisvoreva told Newsday Sport.

“It’s obviously going to be very tough considering the fact that both Kenya and Zambia seem to be bringing quite strong teams, but I am very excited with the composition of our team and with home advantage nothing can stop us,” she added.

She also spoke about the union’s preparedness to host the two intertwined events.

“It’s normal that a country hosting the G & P Trophy stages it on the same week with the Open Strokeplay so were are excited to be the hosts. There is a committee that is in place to spearhead the preparations and we are almost there and we are putting finali touches,” she revealed.

The first Gilberson & Page Trophy test will be played on Tuesday at the Brooke before moving to Chapman on Thursday while the prize-giving ceremony will be at Meikles Hotel that evening.

The Gilberson & Page Trophy Ladies’ Golf Tournament was first played in 1969 as a match between East Africa and Zambia. The 44-year-old championship is today the top ladies’ golf event in the region. In 1983 Zimbabwe was invited and the G&P became a triangular match between Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In 1991 the event became a biennial championship hosted alternately by the participating nations.

The G&P ties consist of three foursome matches, ordinarily played in the morning and six singles matches in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, defending Zimbabwe Ladies’ Open champion Angel Eaton from Tanzania should also be on her way to defend her title next weekend in what promises to be an exciting contest.
