PSL should lead Zifa reforms

THE Premier Soccer League (PSL) is a professional top-flight league made up of 16 teams. Each president/chairman of a club sits on the PSL Board of Governors.

The board of governors is chaired by Caps United’s Twine Phiri and deputised by Highlanders chairman Peter Dube and directs policy that is implemented by head of secretariat, chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele and his team.

These three gentlemen are the epitome of football leadership in this country judging by the smooth flow of the PSL and the high number of sponsors they have brought on board.

Regrettably, that is not the case with Zifa. On Saturday, 43 out of 51 councillors voted for an extraordinary meeting on October 3 where the main agenda is to remove the sitting president, Cuthbert Dube, from office.

The fact that the same councillors have however twice failed to interpret the same constitution they claim to protect, clearly shows their leadership deficiencies.

When the councillors failed on May 16 to fire Dube, world football governing body Fifa was clear on the matter and rejected their action. Fifa insisted that Dube’s expulsion must be an agenda item for the Saturday meeting.

The councillors are now encouraged to read and understand the Zifa constitution on how that Dube issue should be placed on the agenda since it’s clear that a sitting president is not a Zifa member.

With such mediocrity from the councillors, it’s important like Dube, they all must leave the game of football until they understand what their mandate is as football leaders, and how to interpret and protect the constitution.

Unfortunately, Dube has taken advantage of the mediocrity among the councillors to disadvantage the populace yet after his leadership failure, he should have simply walked away.

Without a doubt the Zifa councillors have failed. None of them have a moral leg to stand on other than complain about this and that.

The 2018 World Cup disaster, the Mighty Warriors’ failure to travel to Ivory Coast and the Warriors’ bus trip to Malawi should not be repeated.

We believe the only credible body to lead the Zifa normalisation process could be the PSL. They are untainted at the moment.Ndebele is a renowned administrator and Fifa instructor – the glue that has kept the league flourishing even in these most depressing economic times hence can juggle his role at the PSL and Zifa normalisation committee with ease.

He has put systems in place at the PSL, systems that are not based on individuals, but based on key result performance areas.

With him at the helm and a few other technocrats with Fifa blessings, Zimbabwe football can rise again. The game of football does not need rabble-rousers. Zifa wants solutions, and football needs capable leaders that can provide the solutions.

We believe the inquiry by the Sports and Recreation Commission to be completed by July 31 should point to a direction to stabilise the local game.

Dube and his ilk at Zifa must be booted out immediately to save the country from further embarrassment.
