Acting officer commanding Victoria Falls police, Superintendent Dominic Sibanda said several other suspects had been released after interviews.

“I cannot disclose the names of the suspects as it might disturb the investigations, but we are doing our best to bring the assailants to book,” he said.

He said the murder case was unusual for a small resort town like Victoria Falls.

“We are showing you, we are in the battle and we’re taking this very seriously,” Sibanda said.

PraiseMpofu (16) was attacked and killed on Wednesday night by two unknown men and her body was found floating in the Zambezi River on Thursday morning.

Her boyfriend Brian Dube (21) was left for dead and is still admitted at a local hospital after he was severely beaten by the same assailants near the Big Tree.

Police said the attackers left evidence that led them to suspect that it was a planned murder.

“We suspect that the murder was planned because the same log that killed her was used to beat the boyfriend first after tying his hands from the back,” Sibanda said.

“They thought he had died and they killed the girl as she probably knew them. We suspect she was raped because there are used condoms around the scene, but all those were collected for tests.”

He added: “The log was straight and well-polished measuring about one metre. It had lots of blood and human hair because they were all beaten on the back of their heads. The girl’s corpse was being eaten by fish.”

Meanwhile, Praise’s family spokesperson, Cornelius Mpofu told NewsDay at a funeral wake in Mkhosana high-density suburb that the body was on its way back from Bulawayo after a post-mortem was done.

She will be buried today.
