Speaking at the 239th US Independence Day anniversary in Harare, US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Bruce Wharton said his government was committed to the development of Zimbabwe and had embarked on various projects, mutually beneficial to the two countries.

“We continue to believe in the future of US-Zimbabwe relations, so are embarking on multi-million dollar projects to build a new embassy compound, a project that will create jobs and skills to boost the economy,” Wharton said.

He said despite the US being 239 years old, it remained work in progress and the same optimism that guided all Americans to better themselves to overcome ills like racism and violence guided the US’ approach to Zimbabwe.

Wharton touched on the disappearance of journalist-cum-activist Itai Dzamara, who was suspected to have been abducted by State security agents on March 9.

He said since he believed in the significance of the rule of law and human rights, he would not hesitate to express concern over such a disappearance.

“We continue to believe in the importance of citizens’ access to government, so continue to support programmes that offer mechanisms for citizens and leaders to meet and discuss issues important to both,” Wharton said.

Former Zimbabwe ambassador to the UN Chitsaka Chipaziwa hailed the US-Zim relations, but accused the US government of dominating Zimbabwe.
