The family had by yesterday afternoon raised £291 donated by well-wishers under the Simbarashe Mudzingwa Memorial Fund.

Mudzingwa’s ex-wife Rhoda Tongogara — with whom he had two children, Ruvarashe and Nashe –said she was shocked by his death.

“You were a special dad. I will be there for Ruva, Nashe and Tinashe and remind them of all the good times you had with them,” she said.

She expressed gratitude to Hohodza Band founder Portia Gwanzura who donated £100 to the fund.

Mudzingwa fell seriously ill in a tent at Glastonbury on Friday morning and later pronounced dead at hospital in Swansea, UK.

Reports from the UK say after indicating that he was unwell, medics attended to him at the site’s medical facility but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Mudzingwa was the lead vocalist, mbira and keyboard player for Hohodza together with Aluwis Machapo (lead guitar), John Nyahodya (drummer), Patrick Nyakudya (bass guitar, keyboards), Innocent Jack Farai (mbira, percussion), Lloyd Mapfumo (percussion, king dancer), Jane Josiah (backing vocals, dancer) and Lena Mandizera (backing vocals, dancer).

Hohodza Band was formed in 1992 by Gwanzura who is also based in the UK.
