THE colourful six-day Fashion Exhibition by upcoming designer Nompumelelo Samambgwa, which ended yesterday at Rooftop Travel Plaza, unveiled the designer’s unique, but daring styles that drew hordes of people.

The exhibition which ran under the theme The Holiday saw the young designer unleashing differently designed suits which defined the flamboyance of beach wear that most local designers are “scared” to pursue.

Samambgwa told NewsDay she was surprised by the “overwhelming” attendance.

“The attendance tonight was amazing and I had underestimated myself, but this has proved that my work is being appreciated widely,” she said.

“There are many designers around the country, but all I can say is that diversity is key to making it in the industry rather than sticking to the traditional animal print that has been overdone in the past by other designers.”

She said her secret was entrenched in the ability to explore new things in line with the art and her choice of the unique themes was meant to portray an elaborate sense of adventure embedded in the beauty of a holiday.

Award-winning fashion blogger Ameera Murad Ameer, who was the guest of honour at the exhibition’s launch, said local fashion designers should improve on quality to justify the cost of their products.

“There is no doubt that some of the local products are not at par with international markets so designers should make sure that quality is increased to match other markets if not better and also make prices competitive not unnecessarily higher,” she said.

Samambgwa is the only Zimbabwean who exhibited swim wear at last year’s Zimbabwe Fashion Week festival and she scooped second price at the 2014 Clothing Indaba.

The exhibition was her last project for her degree in Clothing Design and Fashion Technology at the Chinhoyi University of Technology.
