Coventry RFC currently play in the National League One, which is the third tier of the English rugby union system after the Aviva Premiership and the second-tier RFU Championship.

Wolfenden, who has been capped four times with the Sables, quickly established himself as a first-choice lock at National Two South outfit Cambridge in the last two seasons, playing 48 games. Coventry RFC confirmed Wolfenden’s capture and that of former England youth international Ben Thomas on their official website yesterday, saying the pair would add both size and power to their front five pack resources.

“Coventry Rugby are delighted to announce their 11th and 12th new signings, making a total squad of 35 still with a few yet to be named, with the news that lock forward Ben Thomas has signed for Coventry Rugby from Championship side Rotherham Titans together with fellow lock Martin Wolfenden from Cambridge,” Coventry said in a statement on their official website.

“Martin Wolfenden, standing at 6ft 5ins, joins from NL2 South side Cambridge, and is also a member of the Zimbabwean squad and the Eastern Counties squad. Both players add power and strength and experience to the crucial second row role, an area Coventry Rugby struggled with last season after an unprecedented series of injuries. Coventry Rugby are pleased to been able to add two more players to this pivotal role,” read the statement.

Zimbabwe rugby team coach Cyprian Mandenge said he was delighted with Wolfenden’s move, saying although the former Plumtree High schoolboy missed the recent Africa Cup opener against Kenya, he was still firmly in his plans.

“Martin Wolfenden has been capped for the Sables before and is a very aggressive player. We had called him up for the Africa Cup match against Kenya, but unfortunately he told us he could not make it due to work commitments,” he said.

“He will also not be available for the Tunisia game, but should be back for the match against Namibia in August. He’s someone we believe will add value to the Sables and we wish him all the best on his move.”
