Hungwe seeks to resurrect ‘colonial’ education system

Speaking during a tour at Mupfure Self Help College near Chegutu on Tuesday, Psychomotor minister Josaya Hungwe said the Nziramasanga Commission recommendation was failing to take off because of lack of resources.

“The 1999 Commission recommended that there must be a departure from the academic education into the streaming of skills training, but nothing happened. Now if resources permit, we are going to start it at primary education,” Hungwe said.

He was at pains to differentiate his “new education model” with the former colonial education system where those relegated to F2 were regarded as academically inferior.

Hungwe made startling revelations that government was mooting the idea of “equalising subjects” where no subject was considered more important than the other.

“We are going to look at the curriculum and involve all stakeholders with the view of equalising the subjects. The idea is we are equalising the new system of education,” he said.

Hungwe’s penchant for television coverage was exhibited when he took a swipe at the organisers of the tour for failing to invite electronic media journalists.

“The first thing I asked when I came here was where are TV people and there was none. How can you get yourself known when you cannot get these people here?” he asked.
