The Mare Nostrum Series, whose other two legs will be held in Barcelona (June 10 and 11) and Monaco (June 13 and 14) is one of the most prestigious series of events on the global swimming calendar.

Coventry (31), who has been working tirelessly under the guidance of respected coach David Marsh, yesterday confirmed her participation in this weekend’s meet, where she is expected to line up in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley races.

“I will be racing on Saturday and Sunday (today and tomorrow). Preparation does not happen the night before an event, it is an ongoing process. Even this competition is a part of a much bigger process,” said Coventry.

“To be fully prepared, you require dedication to a training/planning regime and then you need to consistently challenge yourself. These challenges will allow self-reflection and analysis to determine: Am I getting better; what do I need to change; who can I reach out to; can I do more.

“The challenge will be difficult, but the results will make it worth it. Start preparing, create challenges, enjoy the rewards, then repeat.”

After this weekend’s meet, Coventry’s next stop will be at the Monaco leg of the Mare Nostrum Series which takes place at the Stade Louis II Swimming Complex next weekend.

Coventry, who has set her sights on a record eighth Olympic medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has been making a splash in her comeback season.

She qualified for the Fina World Championship set for Kazan, Russia, in July following her record breaking performances at the 2015 Arena Pro Swim meet in Arizona, United States back in April.

During the event, Coventry won the 200m backstroke in 2:12:05 to earn a place at the Fina World Championships. She also finished second in the 100m backstroke in a world championship qualifying time of 1:00:89 and fourth in the 200m individual medley.
