A team of 100 athletes and 20 officials have been selected for the Africa Games, formerly known as the All-Africa Games.

Team Zimbabwe marketing and publicity manager Dave Simba said they were done with the initial team selection.

Zimbabwe will field athletes in athletics, beach volleyball, cycling, men’s football, sports for people with disabilities, tennis, swimming, karate, judo and taekwondo.

“We are done with the initial selection of athletes with the help of sports associations. We have selected 100 athletes and 20 officials. The athletes that were selected are our medal hopefuls and have already started preparing for the Games,” he said.

Athletes who include Benjamin Lock for tennis, Ngonidzashe Makusha in athletics and Kirsty Coventry in swimming have been taking part in different competitions which Simba said could assist them in their preparation for the Africa Games.

The Young Warriors recently qualified for the Africa Games after defeating Cameroon 2-1 on aggregate and are on course to complete a historic double if they can beat South Africa over two legs next month to qualify for the Under-23 Championships in Senegal.

Other team sports that are expected to do well are the Zimbabwe rugby Sevens team and beach volleyball.
