Samukange, who recently re-joined Zanu PF after winning parliamentary elections for Mudzi South constituency in 2013 as an independent candidate, is being tipped for the secretary for legal affairs post.

A top party official who refused to be named told NewsDay yesterday that they were confident that Samukange would land the post. “The party wants Samukange to be part of the new executive and he will occupy the legal affairs secretary post. There have been reports that he might be interested in other bigger posts, but for now he is the suitable candidate for that position,” the source said.

Samukange could neither deny nor confirm his interest saying: “Zanu PF has never had a proper legal affairs secretary for the past 20 years and I wouldn’t mind if the offer comes. I am not fighting or competing for any post, but if I am offered an opportunity I will take it. My priority is my constituency. I am a professional lawyer and competing for the position will be a burden on me and will mean I will be having many responsibilities.”

Zanu PF national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere in December dissolved the Ray Kaukonde-led team for allegedly promoting factionalism and being aligned to ousted former Vice-President Joice Mujuru. Kasukuwere immediately appointed an interim executive led by Aeneas Chigwedere to co-ordinate party business in preparation for provincial elections to be held at the end of this month.
