PSL vice chairman Dube leaves for Cosafa workshop

PREMIER Soccer League (PSL) vice-chairman Peter Dube, who is also the Highlanders boss, is in South Africa to attend a Cosafa workshop ahead of the championships that start on Sunday.

Dube, a Zifa Assembly member, is the head of delegation of the Warriors and will be in South Africa until the national team returns.

Highlanders called off their usual Monday evening executive and technical team meeting to review the league match against Harare City as they did not have a quorum in the absence of Dube and his vice-chairman Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu, who is resident in Harare.

As Bosso chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede confirmed the cancellation of the meeting, Zifa communication manager Xolisani Gwesela yesterday also confirmed Dube’s departure for South Africa.

“He (Dube) left yesterday (Monday) for South Africa. He is the head of delegation (HOD) for the Warriors and he is going to attend a workshop with other HODs of participating nations before the Cosafa tournament starts on Sunday.

“The prerequisite for an HOD is that they must be a member of the Zifa Assembly and there is a duty roster. For this tournament it is Dube,” Gwesela.

It’s another sigh of relief for Highlanders head coach Bongani Mafu as Bosso struggle to play to expectations at Barbourfields Stadium after they were saved by an injury time penalty, converted by Gabriel Nyoni to salvage a point against Harare City on Sunday.

Highlanders take on Chicken Inn on Saturday at Barbourfields in their 10th league match of the season and when Mafu was unveiled as head coach in December last year, Gumede said the Uefa B badge holder’s performance would be assessed after 10 matches.

Bosso sit on position six on the log table with 14 points from four wins, two draws and three losses, two of which came at home against Chapungu and Caps United.

Sources have revealed that Mafu’s target is to collect at least 18 points from a possible 30 from his first 10 matches and even if he wins the next game against Chicken Inn, he will still miss the target by a point.
