This marks the first steps of formalising hockey activities in the province and full membership to the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (Haz).

The league will include eight teams from four towns, Banket’s Roots Hockey Club, Chegutu Hockey Club, Kadoma Hockey Club, Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) and Chinhoyi Sports Club while Lomagundi College will provide three.

Haz vice-president Humphrey Chigwedere yesterday said that the province being organised and with good players stood a chance to be considered by the association.

“In order for the province to be recognised by Haz, they should have a constitution and a board and I think the province is trying to promote hockey through the league and the idea is to create a provincial structure,” Chigwedere said.

“Mashonaland West has good teams and it is an organised province. We have seen teams such as Chinhoyi University of Technology doing well at the university games in Bulawayo that ran in March and got a bronze medal and I believe in future the national team will have players from the province. Lomagundi College is also outstanding,” he added.

The Haz board will be looking at the province’s application to be considered by Haz in September.

“The province has been meeting and planning on a constitution and an interim committee has been set up to oversee the drafting of a constitution, election of an executive committee, application for membership with Haz and all other governance issues that may need to be dealt with. We expect them to apply in August for approval and in September we hope they will have an executive board and that is when we will see whether to accept the province at the national association’s annual general meeting in terms of the Haz constitution,” Chigwedere said.
