Zivhu, who is director-general of the Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association (Zaha), said he had no ambitions to use the donations as a political springboard.

Speaking in Madyangove village under Chief Madamombe on Sunday during the handover of a house built by Zaha for a widow, Elizabeth Sithole, Zivhu, said he understood well the predicament of the less privileged since he also faced the same plight while growing up.

“Some people may think I am doing this as a way of campaigning or I want to be a Member of Parliament. That is far from the truth. We are just helping. I know how it feels since I grew under the custodianship of my grandmother who sold tomatoes for me to go to school before other well-wishers came to my rescue,” he said.

“We helped here after we heard of the dire plight of this woman. That is why under this programme, I started in areas far from my home constituency. Otherwise people were going to misconstrue our motives,” he said.

Sithole could not hide her joy after her pole-and-dagga huts were pulled down and replaced with a modern brick-and-mortar house. “I did not dream of owning a decent house like this. I used to share these two huts with my seven kids and a grandchild. This is the greatest gift in my life. I am really speechless,” she said.

Zaha has a massive programme where it builds houses for poor families countrywide.

The programme started three years ago and in Masvingo, this is the second house after another one was built in Gutu last year. Zivhu said his organisation planned to take the initiative to several other parts of the country..
