The winners had to whitewash arch-rivals and hosts Gutu High in both soccer and netball to claim the top honours.

The competitions, that coincided with the Africa Day holiday celebrations, drew six schools from across Masvingo province that battled it out for the prize money.

Gutu emerged favourites right from the start in soccer, edging Chibi 1-0 in a tightly contested match that saw the match officials emerging as the villains for the visitors only for the two teams to meet in the finals.

Chibi eventually won the match by a similar margin in a match that exposed the rowdiness of the hosts as teachers, students and fans teamed up to assault the match officials.

To complete the drubbing, the visitors also dismissed Gutu 3-10 in netball in a tie-breaker after they had drawn 17-all.

Chibi walked away with $1 500 and a trophy for their troubles in soccer, while Gutu took home a trophy and $500.

ZLG spokesperson Brian Chiparawasha said they were working to increase the sponsorship for next year’s tournament.

“We are working to engage different partners so that we grow the event. It is our goal to make sure that we assist in shaping the dreams of these children not only in class, but in different other respects,” Chiparawasha said.

“Every year, we donate computers worth $50 000 to different schools and we also have another project that will see 100 disadvantages children getting $100 for their school fees.”

The ZLG Gutu Invitational Schools Sports Tournament is now in its third year running.
