Both teams came into the match without a win seven games into the season, but finally it was Buffaloes who registered their first victory in the Manicaland derby which was decided by Shepherd Nkata’s solitary strike.
The match got off to a frantic start, but both sides lacked precision in front of the goal.
In the 11th minute Buffaloes striker Lloyd Katongomara missed a glorious chance in a face-to-face situation with the visitors’ shot stopper Forward Pfumojena, but he chose to shot wide.
Two minutes later veteran striker Jacob Muzokomba did well to beat his markers before sending a whipping cross inside the box that was headed wide.
Katongomara was given a straight red card after a rough challenge on the top-flight debutants, defender Kelvin Katandika in the 28th minute.
In the 33th minute the home side threatened through Never Tigere, who struck a ferocious low shot that was brilliantly dealt with the army side goalkeeper Blessing Mwandimutsira. Two minutes later Dongo Sawmills won a free kick at the opposition box, but Tigere’s shot was saved by the army side’s rearguard.
In the 65th minute substitute Blessing Dzumbunu had a chance to propel his side into the lead, but he shot wide.
The army side was thrust into the lead in the 80th minute through the boot of defender Nkata who had benefited from Muzokomba’s cross.
