Addressing thousands of Zanu PF party supporters at Dema during the handover ceremony of rice donated by the Chinese government to underprivileged people, Chief Seke, who was tasked to deliver the vote of thanks, said he was aware that traditional leaders should be apolitical, but could not do so because of his love for the ruling party.

“Let us support Zanu PF, and its leader President Mugabe. I know some will say that chiefs must not be political, but with me it is different. Let me tell you the people of Seke that if you do not support Mugabe, living in harmony with me will be difficult,” said Chief Seke.

Chief Seke’s utterances were in violation of Chapter 15, Section 281 of the new Constitution which states that traditional leaders must not be members of any political party or in any way participate in partisan politics, act in a partisan manner, and further the interests of any political party or cause.

Seke district received about nine tonnes of rice.

Mashonanaland East Provincial Affairs minister Joel Biggie Matiza, who was the guest of honour, said Mugabe would keep his promise of ensuring that people would not die of hunger.

“I have been touring districts in this province and I am convinced that some of us in two weeks’ time will be experiencing severe hunger. But our President promised that no one will fall short of food and we all know that he will fulfil his promise,” Matiza said.

“We will make sure that people will get food in time. But for now the President went to China and brought you rice that will be given to those above 70, disabled and child-headed families. Each of the nine districts received about 10 tonnes of rice and thank President Mugabe for that.”
