Close to 35 competitors are expected to bring their certified mean machines for battle at the annual two-day event which has kept a low profile over the years, but is rapidly becoming the most anticipated motorsport event in the country.

While most motorsport genres focus on adrenalin pumping speed duels, the jamboree is more about guile, strength and balance, then a little bit of speed as off-road vehicles square up in the face of various challenges and obstacles.

The jamboree committee chairman Tim Thorburn told NewsDay Sport that everything was now in place for the successful staging of this year’s episode.

“Everything is now in place for this year’s edition of the hp lubes Castrol 4×4 Jamboree which will take place at Donnybrook on Saturday and on Sunday,” he said. “We are extremely grateful to hp lubes who have sponsored the event for the past 21 years as well as Toyota Zimbabwe who sponsor the Extreme Challenge, an important part of the jamboree scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

“The event has clearly been growing lately in terms of competitor numbers and spectators. We are expecting between 30 – 35 cars to register this time around and no less than 3 500 spectators.”

Alex Hawkins is favourite to rule the roost in the standard modified vehicle class while in the standard short wheel base Aubrey Bennett is the front for the top accolade as Gareth Barry’s Jeep expected to challenge for the bragging right in the same class.
