RIOT police on Friday maintained a heavy presence in Gweru city centre, thwarting a planned demonstration by MDC-T provincial youth assembly members against the declining economy and general unemployment the youths face.

Riot police officers, in groups of 10 and armed with batons, tear gas canisters and rifles maintained a watchful eye on the streets.

By lunch time, MDC-T youth leaders were locked in meetings with the police in Gweru, as the situation grew tense. The youths wanted to hand over a petition to Provincial Affairs minister, Jason Machaya in protest against Zanu PF’s failure to fulfil its 2013 election promise to create 2,2 million jobs.

Contrary to its promise, the party has not created any jobs, but instead Finance minister, Patrick Chinamasa is on record saying 4 600 companies closed between 2011 and October 2014 resulting in 64 000 job losses.
