The 25-year-old Mutare-born golfer, who recently announced his intentions of retracing his Zimbabwean roots ahead of next year’s Olympics, closed with a two-under 71 to finish third, five shots behind the eventual winner Vaughn Groenewald.

The other Zimbabwean pair of Mark Williams (eight-under-par 284) and Ryan Cairns (four-under-par 288) also fared well in Lusaka finishing in a tie for 16th and 27th respectively.

However, it is Burmester’s hot streak which continues to catch the eye as he has not finished outside the top 10 on the Sunshine Tour in his last five events.

Since finishing in a tie for 18th position at the Africa Open in March, Burmester was tied for third place at the Tswane Open, eighth at the Investec Cup before winning the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open at Royal Harare Golf Club.

The three-time winner on the Sunshine Tour was ninth at the Mopani/Redpath Zambia Open in Kitwe before Sunday’s third place finish.

Burmester’s consistent run yesterday lifted him into the top 200 on the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time and in string contention to accompany Brendon de Jonge at the Olympics in Rio.

He will be hoping to continue his brilliant form after being added to this week’s field for the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open to be played at the Heritage Golf Club starting on Thursday.

The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open which has a $1,1 million is the first tournament sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour, European Tour and Asian Tour.

Royal Harare Golf Club professional Ryan Cairns is also part of the studded list of professional golfers set to participate in the lucrative tournament after receiving a sponsors’ invitation last week.
