DISGRUNTLED Zanu PF members, who used to rally behind ousted former Headlands MP Didymus Mutasa, have reportedly thrown their weight behind independent candidate Albert Mukaratira and vowed to vote for him resoundingly in the June 10 by-election.

DISGRUNTLED Zanu PF members, who used to rally behind ousted former Headlands MP Didymus Mutasa, have reportedly thrown their weight behind independent candidate Albert Mukaratira and vowed to vote for him resoundingly in the June 10 by-election.

Some of the ruling party members confirmed the development yesterday, saying they were already on the ground campaigning for Mukaratira instead of their party candidate Christopher Chingosho.

“As Headlands constituency, we found it possible to join hands with an independent candidate as a way of shunning (President Robert) Mugabe,” said one of the supporters.

“They blocked our leader and candidate Cde Mutasa through those technicalities and now we are behind Mukaratira. Let’s all join hands and defeat this repressive regime,” added one of Mutasa’s allies who identified himself as James Makoni.

Mutasa’s nomination papers were rejected by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) during the nomination court sitting in Mutare recently after the beleaguered politician tried to contest the by-election on a Zanu PF ticket.

Although Mutasa said he was going to contest the decision by Zec, his supporters have since abandoned the mission and rallied behind Mukarakatira.

Mukarakatira will square off with Chingosho (Zanu PF) and David Mukunda from NCA.

Efforts to get a comment from Mukarakatira were fruitless as his mobile phone went unanswered.
