Council chamber secretary Josephine Ncube said the move was necessitated by findings of a recent audit which unearthed massive corruption by housing co-operatives and land barons selling stands in the area.

“We were given a directive by the government to take over Caledonia. We want to ensure that there is regular registration of stands and replanning so that residents can stay legitimately,” she said.

Ncube added that residents who were illegally allocated stands would be handed over to government for relocation.

The audit report showed that prospective home seekers lost over $57 million to land barons and fraudulent co-operative leaders, although no arrests have been made to date.
