Mugabe priorities wrong – Msipa

ZANU PF long-serving and former politburo member, Cephas Msipa, has blasted his fellow party members for wasting precious time “politicking” and fighting each other instead of addressing the current economic challenges facing Zimbabwe.

Msipa’s remarks came in the wake of plans by expelled Zanu PF members to form a political party under the banner Zanu People First — reportedly under former Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s leadership.

Mujuru yesterday defended the “People First” project, saying the “original Zanu PF slogan “Iwe neni tine basa”, loosely translated (you and I have work to do), always had the people at heart.

In an exclusive interview with NewsDay at his base in Gweru last Friday, Msipa said Zanu PF was economically clueless and had no capacity to remedy the free-falling economy “because of its divisive tendencies”.
He said the ruling party’s priorities were wrong.

“It is sad that the politburo is spending so much time to oust cadres from the party. Even during my time in there (politburo), we spent so much time politicking and never dedicated much time to tackling economic and development issues,” Msipa said.

“I look back and it’s a pity that we have never spent even a single night discussing how best we can turn around the economy. Our priorities are wrong.”

President Robert Mugabe chairs politburo and Cabinet.
Zanu PF is currently swimming in the middle of a storm, with several top party members including Mujuru being

booted out on allegations of plotting to oust Mugabe.

“It is very unfortunate and embarrassing that now we are talking of Weevils and Gamatox which is foreign and divisive to the party. We should go back to our roots where we used to call each other mwana wevhu (son of the soil). It is sad that the likes of former Vice-President Mujuru are being treated this way by the party,” Msipa said.

Other ruling party heavyweights that have recently been booted out include former secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa, former spokesperson Rugare Gumbo, among others , but the axe was still hanging over several party stalwarts linked to the Mujuru camp.

Msipa said although Mujuru had been kicked out of Zanu PF, she and many others remained genuine national heroes.
“We can disagree on political and maybe economic issues, but that should not be used to distort our history. A hero yesterday will always remain a hero today,” he said.

Msipa, the former Midlands governor, is the oldest surviving former PF Zapu member, largely credited for brokering the 1987 Unity Accord which united Zanu and PF Zapu, ending the Gukurahundi massacre.

Gukurahundi saw the death of over 20 000 civilians’ mostly in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces.
On reports that expelled former Zanu PF members were planning to form an opposition party, Msipa said: “As a democrat, I do not have problems with anyone forming a party, but there has to be justification of that
formation. People need to know that in what way are they different from Zanu PF, and then later on, it will be up to the electorate to decide whether to get them in office or not. Remember we fought for democracy.”

Mujuru has vowed that she could not be fired from the “Original Zanu PF”, a move which showed that she was spoiling for a fight with Mugabe.

  1. There is very little they can do to Cephas now for telling the truth but, as a reporter you should ask him on behalf of the nation what he thinks is the solution to government failure. It’s not a crime to seek the truth from someone who has been in the mix.

  2. Mugabe’s priorities have always been wrong since the time ZANU PF got power in 1980. Msipa himself is complicit. ZANU PF is a party that is only good at managing people, not a country. In 1980, the whites, who had been beaten in a general election, were sweetened with promises of peace and security. In 1987, a hurting population from Southern Zimbabwe was sweetened by the Unity Accord. In 1999, a citizenry smarting from the effects of EASP and many other bungled policies was sweetened by a promise to correct colonial land imbalances. In 2005, a country aggrieved by Murambatsvina again accepted ice-cream and chilled. In 2008/9, a country that had gone to the dogs was cooled by the emergence of a GNU. Now the situation is going out of hand again but, ZANU PF through in information department build up to the Independence Day celebrations with “#sofarsogood”. What can you do when your government is full of Psychologists and no economists and others?

  3. Zimbabweans just need to gather courage to go out in the streets and demonstrate against this illegal government which has been stealing elections since 2000.Freedom and good governance will not come on a silver plate.Mugabe after loosing 2008 election dismally he declared that this country ‘can not be taken over by means of pen’ Recent developments of militarization of key state and civil instistutions by Mugabe shows that Zanu Pf hardliners will not surrender the country to majority and democratic rule easily. They have massive looted wealth to protect.massive tracts of land, equipment, money, power and dont want to fall off the gravy train to continue looting state resources.Zimbabweans need to come out of their comfort zones and declare enough is enough otherwise the totalitarian rule is here to stay.

  4. Well said madhala, and considering that this politiburo is the same cabinet and they say the party is supreme to government, Zimbabwe needs devine intervention to exocise this demon.

  5. ZANU PF WILL NEVER SURRENDER THE COUNTRY TO MAJORITY RULE AND DEMOCRACY ON A SILVER PLATE.ZIMBABWEANS NEED TO GET PREPARED FOR REAL THIRD CHIMURENGA TO LIBERATE THEMSELVES.MUGABE OPENLYDECLARED IN2008 THAT HE NEVER SURRENDER THE COUNTRY THROUGH THE PEN.
THE ZANU CRONIES HAVE FARMS,WEALTH AND POWER TO PROTECT AT WHATEVER COST.THEY HAVE SHOWN THEIR GREAT INSENSITIVITY TO ZIMBABWEAN POPULACE,BY CONTINUOUSLY ENGAGING IN UNPRODUCTIVE POWER FIGHTS AND PURGES WHILE THE ECONOMY BLEEDS AND SUFFERING OF ZIMBAZ GETS WORSE THE DAY.
THEREFORE ZIMBABWEANS NEED TO GET OUT THEIR COMFORT ZONES.NOONE WILL LIBERATE YOU FROM TYRANNY BONDAGE EXCEPT YOURSELVES.

  6. How Gukurahundi get mentioned in this report. Is there a deliberate plot to keep us hating each other forever. The reporter could easily have told us what Msipa did during the fight against Rhodesia which I think would be relevant in this report.

    Help build this country.
