SADC member states will soon embark on a long-term project of economic and social transformation, the bloc’s executive secretary Stergomena Lawrence Tax said yesterday when she officially opened the Sadc ministers’ extraordinary summit in Harare.BY BUSINESS REPORTER Tax said countries in the region need to speed up the implementation of the road map for the full industrialisation of the region and that it was important to achieve the task for the improvement of the region. “In order to achieve the feat we have set ourselves, it is clear that the region embarks on a long-term project of economic and social transformation, to be supported by our concerted efforts, and commitment during the three-phased duration of 2015 to 2063. Our goal as a region is clear: to ensure the realisation of the strategy, with the target of progressively higher rewards in income, employment and broader social well-being,” said Tax. The region started discussing about the Sadc industrialisation strategy and roadmap after the 34th Ordinary Summit that was held last year in Victoria Falls. The strategy was spearheaded by the Sadc Ministerial Task Force (MTF) on regional economic integration that comprised ministers responsible for trade and industry, finance, economic planning and infrastructure development. The industrialisation strategy is aligned to the Continental Vision, Agenda 2063, a global strategy aimed at optimising the use of Africa’s resources for the benefit of all Africans. It was expected that the extraordinary summit would approve the Sadc Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap that will become the blueprint for industrial development and enhance deeper economic integration in the Region. The five-day summit — being held under the theme: Regional Strategy and Roadmap for Industrialisation — opened on Saturday.
