The athletes trooped into a 10-day camp on Monday at Northlea High School, Bulawayo, where they began their first training session.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) first vice-president Enias Nhoro said: “The second day of training camp for Team Zimbabwe turned out to be spectacular as the athletes were using a standard facility. “We utilised the White City Stadium for the tartan track as the athletes are scheduled to compete on a standard facility during the Cossasa games in Lesotho.

“Basically, athletes trained on grass, compared to those who conduct their training on a standard facility, will not produce excellent results if they are to compete on a standardised facility.”

Nhoro indicated that the morning sessions would be conducted at White City Stadium and the afternoon sessions would be more of conditioning the athletes at their camp site in Northlea.

The athletes are under the guidance of renowned coaches Lisimati Phakamile from Matabeleland South, Briad Nhubu from Manicaland, Simon Mugura from Masvingo, Silas Muringani from Harare and Lilian Chitiriro from Mashonaland East.

Cossasa cater for primary and secondary schools represented in the Under-14 and 17 and under categories. Team Zimbabwe is made up of the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) and National Association of Primary Heads (Naph) athletes.
