The event, which will run under the theme Waste no Waste: Trash is Treasure, is the second edition of the event hosted by FOG in a bid to spread awareness on environmental responsibility through waste management.

Last year, they held a similar initiative under the theme Vanishing Wetlands.

Open artists and schoolchildren will create art work in cognisance of the theme to win prices on two separate competitions. A selected group of renowned artists will be commissioned to paint on bins on May 9 at the NGZ in a televised event to be graced by members of the NGZ board.

In a statement yesterday, the coordinator of FOG, Marcey Mushore, said the idea was to induce a culture of waste management in the younger generation through creation of artwork from what is viewed as useless material.

“Our main aspirations are to catch the young (school children) so that we nurture environmentally conscious citizens by giving them necessary awareness,” Mushore said.

Apart from schools, the programme will also engage celebrities, captains of the industry and the diplomatic community from varied sectors of society for a greater contribution towards the cause.

Proceeds from the auction will be forwarded to the National Gallery Permanent Collection, a department set for historic pieces which are kept for future references.
