ZRP expresses readiness to face Boko Haram

A SENIOR officer in the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) yesterday said the force was ready for tough foreign assignments even in Nigeria where Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, has unleashed a bloody terror campaign.

Speaking at a welcoming ceremony for 30 police officers who recently completed their tour of duty in Lesotho, Chief Inspector Joseph Mukundwe said the ZRP was always ready for any peacekeeping missions including in volatile countries such as Nigeria.

“Whenever the Nigerians are having elections, Sir, please don’t hesitate to send us there. We will deal with the notorious Boko Haram,” said Mukundwe as he briefed Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri and other senior officers on the successful mission they had in Lesotho.

Nigeria was forced to postpone its elections to later this month following rising fears of disruptions by Boko Haram.

The militant group has caused a lot of turmoil in Nigeria, killing and abducting thousands of people as it tries to set up an Islamic state.

It has also attacked other neighbouring countries like Cameroon and Chad.

Last year, Boko Haram abducted more than 200 schoolgirls, prompting a global campaign to have them released.

Zimbabwe was the second to arrive in Lesotho after South Africa to observe and monitor the mountain kingdom’s tense elections last month.

According to the contingent’s commander Chief Superintendent Cosmas Mushore, the ZRP officers’ performance and discipline was outstanding.

Speaking at the same event, Chihuri said: “Africa today has challenges from various destabilising forces which are hampering the continent’s developing aspirations.

“Some of these destabilising situations are sponsored by erstwhile imperial forces that are determined to portray the continent as a citadel of confusion.

“Indeed, such marauding elements have stifled progress in Africa as funds that are meant for structural and social adjustments would end up being directed towards security causes.

“Such is the state of affairs today that every self-respecting African should stand up to fight for and to defend the sovereignty of our continent.”

ZRP has participated in numerous peacekeeping missions in various countries around the globe.
