Jonathan Guzhanga (27) was convicted on his own plea of guilty to two counts of contravening the Domestic Violence Act when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Lazarus Murendo.

The court heard that on January 1 this year, Guzhanga had a heated argument with his wife Portia Chibwana (32) whom he accused of having an affair with their neighbor after having seen her greeting him the previous day.

He later tied her legs together with a cloth and assaulted her all over the body using a leather belt.

Chibwana reported the matter to the police, but Guzhanga fled and went into hiding. After the incident, the woman moved out of their matrimonial home and sought new lodgings in St Mary’s. On March 9, Guzhanga stormed into her new lodgings in the dead of the night and further assaulted her, this time accusing her of running away from him.

Chibwana sustained injuries on her neck, face, chest and hands. She reported the matter to police, leading to his arrest. Norman Koropi prosecuted.
