The four students, Thabiso Tapera, Peter Bere, Juliana Mahofa from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), and Cane Makuwatsine from University of Zimbabwe, are expected to fly to China this weekend for a five-year programme at the University of Jinan.

SZCC and the University of Jinan are jointly funding the scholarship programme.

Speaking at a send-off ceremony, SZCC managing director Wang Yong said a techno-savvy generation was key in the future industrial development of the country.

“Mechanical engineering is a priority development area for the Zimbabwean economy. On the other hand, China is one of the world’s leading economies with advanced technology and highly developed in the field of sciences. On completion of their degrees, we expect these students will be agents of skills and technology transfer,” he said.

SZCC assigned private consultants to conduct psychometric tests at various universities and the four came out tops.

China Building Materials Industrial Corporation president Fang Yongbin, who is also SZCC board chairman, initiated the scholarship programme in 2013.
