PROGRESSIVE Democrats of Zimbabwe (PDZ) president Barbra Nyagomo has accused fired former Zanu PF secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa of stealing her party slogan — “People First”.

Mutasa recently said he belonged to the “real” Zanu PF whose slogan was “People First”, which incidentally happens to be PDZ’s motto.

“It is shocking that Mutasa, who is now fighting for political relevance after being chucked out of the gravy train, wants to appear as if he has the people at heart,” Nyagomo said on Saturday in a statement sent from her United Kingdom base.

“This is the same Mutasa who persecuted political opposition not so long ago in Manicaland province. He was President Robert Mugabe’s close lieutenant for years. He served the same system that plundered the country, disregarding the people’s will and should never speak like a saint.”

Nyagomo challenged Mutasa to leave out her party motto in his fights with Zanu PF, claiming her party had registered the slogan with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

“I am extremely disappointed that the Zanu PF wing associated with Comrade Mutasa has started to use PDZ slogan ‘People First’ on various media platforms. This trait of stepping on small people and grabbing at will any organisation, business or viable entity started way back in 1980.This is a typical Zanu PF trait.”

The opposition leader said she was disappointed that the former Presidential Affairs minister did not even have the courtesy to ask PDZ about the motto, but just “grabbed” it, adding they might soon take legal action if Mutasa remained defiant.

Nyagomo said her party would field a candidate to contest the Headlands seat which recently fell vacant following Mutasa’s recall from Parliament.

“Our candidate is ready and we will be launching our campaign soon as well as rolling out several development programmes in different districts of the country,” she said.

Mutasa was not reachable by the time of going to print last night to respond to the allegations.
