Jail breaker claims ill-treatment

A CONVICT who broke out of Chinhoyi Prison last month before he was tracked down and rearrested told magistrate Nyasha Kature that his decision to skip the prison walls had been caused by the ill-treatment he received at the hands of prison wardens.

Blessing Mupariwa made the claims during mitigation before he was slapped with a three-month jail term for escaping from lawful custody.

Mupariwa said prison officers forced him to carry 40 litres of water over a distance of 2km to the wardens’ homes each day. He bolted out of prison after serving half of his six-month jail term for assault. The court ordered him to complete his sentence in Harare. Hezel Kondo prosecuted.
