THE MDC-T-dominated Harare City Council has reversed its earlier decision to block Harare South MP Shadreck Mashayamombe (Zanu PF) from leasing a huge piece of commercial land in the constituency. This came after Zanu PF councillors raised concern over the politicisation of the matter.

According to latest council minutes, the finance and development committee recommended Mashayamombe to lease stand number 22 Tariro Township with an option to buy the land.

MDC-T councillors had argued that the land was too big for the purpose.

Mashayamombe had also threatened to take the issue up with Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo arguing that he was being treated unfairly despite him having followed due procedure. The latest full council minutes resolved to lease the Zanu PF Harare provincial commissar the land in question as earlier agreed.

“On February 12, this committee had recommended to council the lease of the above-mentioned stand. On March 2, council referred the matter back to the committee for further consideration citing the reasons that the stand was too big for commercial purposes,” the minutes read in part.

The land is 4 594 square metres and the committee recommended that the stand was designated commercial and the size was as approved on the layout plan.

“That this committee affirms its decision recorded under Item 23 of its minutes dated February 12 to lease stand 22 of Tariro Township to Shadreck Mashayamombe for commercial purposes for an initial period of five years at a monthly rental of $859.”

Meanwhile, Mashayamombe has called for a meeting today to address the issue of the Ushewokunze housing co-operative in his constituency that has seen some members demonstrating against the decision to compensate private firm CFI Holdings as per the court order.
