The quiz competition was organised by Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) as part of their edutainment initiative.

For their exploits Allan Wilson walked away with a shield and medals for each participant. Conway College came second while Highfield High 1 was third.

Speaking after a fun-filled day where singer Ammara Brown stole the show with her scintillating performance, Programnes Coordinator of YMCA Mazvita Shonhiwa said the quiz competition was a way of teaching pupils serious life issues in a more relaxed way.

“We want pupils to enjoy while they learn. The questions were mainly based on neglected health issues,” Masvita said.

Pupils were being asked to answer questions on drug abuse, sexually-transmitted diseases, pregnancy and HIV. Masvita said the competition was an-eye-opener on the need to include all pupils irrespective of their background. “We wanted students from Danhiko who are disabled (to participate), but they could not make it. However, pupils from St Giles also showed that disability does not mean inability with their singing performance,” she said. YMCA Youth’s chairperson Elton Jimu said he was impressed by the turn out and they were planning to make it an annual event.

“This shows that the youths want to learn and we want to thank the teachers for supporting the initiative, Jimu said.
