Speaking just after receiving a National Arts Merit Award (NAMA) as The Outstanding Male musician at the 7 Arts Theatre, the Njiva hit-maker who dedicated the award to his wife made the stunning revelations that he had not been comfortable moving around with his wife, before thanking superstar Mtukudzi for giving him the confidence to do so.

“All along I was a person who was not comfortable moving around in public with my wife but credit goes to my mentor Oliver Mtukudzi who encouraged me to parade my wife in public, and this is why we are together tonight,” said Sulu, much to the delight of the audience.

Mtukudzi, who was accompanied by wife Daisy, was all smiles and clapped hands after Sulu’s comment.

Dressed to kill, Sulu was accompanied to the podium by his wife, who was also smartly dressed, to receive the award which he later dedicated to his sweetheart.

Sulu who is currently riding high with new album, Gunship, has of late been keeping his love life a secret, leaving people to guess until recently when he started to move around with Linda.

Mtukudzi and Sulu share a good working relationship that has seen the two recording duets.

Meanwhile, Mtukudzi urged NAMA organisers not to honour only him but other artists from various artistic disciplines.

The seasoned musician was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the colourful event held in the capital.

In his speech, Tuku urged the organisers to cast their nets wider and honour other artists besides him.

“I would like to say do not honour only me, there are a lot of artists; the poets who contributed much to this industry, they need to be recognised for the better of the industry,” he said.

Tuku has received numerous awards from both local and international organisations. He has also assumed ambassadorial duties for some organisations among them Unicef where he is the Goodwill ambassador for southern Africa.
